Separation in a GAS Chromatograph (GC)
A carrier gas move a sample through a coated column
where the separation takes place. The GC output is
measured by the IRD detector and the signal is
registrered versus time. The area of the peak is
proportional to the concentration of a component.
Detection and Identification in Infared (IR)
The GC column is directly connected to a infrared
spectrometer (IR).
The separated molecules elute to the flow cell of the
IR detector.
In the flow cell the molecules are are bathed with
infrared energy.
Absorption spectra are computed using an
interferometer and fourier transforms (FT). The
absorption spectra is a fingerprint of the molecule
